'Pee-Wee' Smith has big shoes to fill at UAB
 Darion Smith likes the pressure of trying to replace Jake Seitz in the middle of UAB's offensive line.
Smith never played on the same team with Seitz, but he does know how valuable the former UAB center was to the Blazers. Smith knows about Seitz's streak of 48 consecutive starts. And, after watching film, Smith determined that, in his opinion, Seitz is an "NFL caliber" player.
After digesting all of that, the 6-foot-2, 280-pound Smith still feels it's helpful for his own progress as a player to follow someone so important to the team.

UAB freshman quickly earns a starting spot at DE
Connor Boyett is eight days into life as a college student and eight days short of playing in his first college football game.
The nerves should be rumbling through the 6-foot-5, 250-pound UAB defensive end's body.
Surprisingly, Boyett remains calm, even though he's the only true freshman at UAB slated to be in the starting lineup in the quickly approaching Sept. 2 season opener against Florida Atlantic at Legion Field.
"It's not that I'm nervous, it's that I want to have everything down," Boyett said. "If I'm fully prepared then there is no need to be nervous."... |

Freshmen wide receivers are catching some attention
Personnel decisions aren't part of Frantrell Forrest's job description on the UAB football team.
It's his job to play wide receiver for the Blazers. However, Forrest does have a personnel suggestion for head coach Neil Callaway when it comes to the young wide receivers on the roster.
"Don't redshirt them because they look real good," Forrest said. "I'm real excited about them -- all of them. I think they're the future of UAB."... |

2010 Conference USA Football Predictions
 The Blazers could easily finish in the top half of this division, as they get both Marshall and East Carolina at home. The problem is, they have a really tough road schedule, and I think they disappoint in 2010... |

UAB signs one basketball recruit and loses another
 UAB added a piece to its 2010-11 men’s basketball roster with the addition of 7-foot junior college transfer Beas Hamga. But the Blazers also lost a recruit when Tyree Graham, who has been committed for several weeks, signed with Rutgers.
Hamgas, who signed a national letter of intent late Wednesday night, comes to UAB from Weatherford... |
