UAB women's basketball win over SMU
UAB’s Amber Jones, Tamika Dukes and Jala Harris got most of the attention after the Blazers advanced to the semifinals in the Conference USA Women’s Basketball Tournament at the Reynolds Center in Tulsa.
That’s understandable considering they combined for 60 of the team’s points in the 64-55 victory over No. 3 seed SMU.
But UAB head coach Audra Smith said her team isn’t still playing without contributions from everyone that played... |

UAB lets lead slip away in loss to UTEP
Derrick Caracter’s dunk with less than a second remaining provided the final points in UTEP’s thrilling 52-50 Conference USA victory over UAB on Saturday night at the Don Haskins Center.
It’s what happened afterward that had UAB head coach Mike Davis angry.
Caracter’s dunk was followed by a wild celebration from the UTEP players. More than one player left the bench to celebrate, even though it appeared there was still time on the clock.
Davis contended a technical foul should have been called on the Miners. Davis said an official told him that a technical couldn’t be called becaus... |

UAB now on Tulsa time
UAB needs to get past the disappointment over what happened in El Paso on Saturday night. The 52-50 loss to C-USA champion UTEP is over and it’s time to look ahead to the Conference USA Tournament at the BOK Center in Tulsa.
Obviously, it won’t be an easy road for the No. 3 seed Blazers, who open the tournament on Thursday against the winner of a first round game between Southern Miss and Tulane. The Blazers beat Southern Miss by a combined margin of six points in the team’s two meetings. UAB beat Tulane by eight points in New Orleans and whipped the Green Wave, 76-55, at Bartow Arena.

All eyes on RPI in college basketball
UAB coach Mike Davis has no clue what the Ratings Percentage Index actually calculates. All he knows is it's his best friend.
"I like it this year a lot because our RPI is pretty good," Davis said. "I shouldn't say I like it. I love it."
The RPI -- a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule -- was born in 1981 to help select and seed the NCAA men's basketball tournament. Today, it's common lingo to qualify a team's chances, although the NCAA selection committee says the RPI is only one important tool in selecting the 34 at-large teams... |

Crawford plays his final home game on Wednesday
UAB senior Howard Crawford has lived the NCAA Tournament dream.
He’s seen what it’s like to carry a team deep into March. He’s seen the national attention and witnessed the reaction in his hometown.
Now he’d love to see what it feels like to actually be on the floor while living that dream.
See, his only NCAA experience came when his older brother, Antoine Pettway, pulled on... |

It was a struggle but UAB wins again
UAB survived on Wednesday night against UCF and freshman Dexter Fields grew up a bit in his first collegiate visit to his hometown.
One would be hard-pressed to find something else positive that happened for UAB in the Blazers 53-49 win over UCF in front of a UCF Arena crowd of 4,618.
“We’re still rolling,” said UAB point guard Aaron Johnson. “The key thing for this team is to keep winning, no matter how we win. I mean, we want to play our best basketball every time we come out and that’s something we try to focus on. Some... |
