UAB and Memphis meet again tonight at the FedExForum
Focusing on what the Memphis men’s basketball team doesn’t have has to be tempting for the UAB players when they arrive tonight at the FedExForum.
The Tigers no longer have a record-setting Conference USA winning streak. They no longer have the conference’s best talent from top to bottom. Most importantly, they no longer have the aura of invincibility they carried when John... |

UAB loses heartbreaker to UTEP
The game-winning shot — at least the one that would have given UTEP the win at the end of regulation — was negated because UTEP forward Arnett Moultrie was hanging on the rim while Julyan Stone’s running 4-footer was still in the net.
Ten minutes later, the teams finally stopped playing.
Eventually, the Miners didn’t need any final-second heroics. Instead, they wore down a UAB team that finished without Aaron Johnson, Elijah Millsap and Kenneth Cooper and the Blazers now have to share first place in Conference USA. The Miners’ 74-65 doubleovertime victory before a near capacity cro... |

Will UAB's Aaron Johnson play on Wednesday at Memphis?
UAB head coach Mike Davis said on Sunday that he'll have to wait and see if Aaron Johnson will play in Wednesday's key Conference USA game at Memphis.
Johnson, on the other hand, posted on his Facebook page that he expects to play in the game. He broke his nose with 2:41 left in Saturday's 74-65 double overtime loss to UTEP at Bartow Arena and never returned to the floor.
We'll see on Wednesday at the FedExForum what happens.

Home sweet home for UAB
UAB point guard Aaron Johnson stood near center court on Tuesday evening at Bartow Arena.
His head was cocked to the left while he held his right hand to his right ear. The UAB point guard was trying to squeeze a little more noise out of a student section that filled nearly three sections from the bottom to the top.
The noise was already a bit overwhelming, even for the players wearing the home uniforms.
“It was an uproar,” UAB senior guard George Drake said of the noise generated by the home fans during Tuesday’s important Conference USA victory over Tulsa. “It’s almost like the... |

UAB protects this house like no one in the Deep South
Bartow Arena doesn’t look exactly like its namesake wanted it to look.
Gene Bartow pushed for a building below street level. Fans would enter and have to walk down to reach every seat. It turned out that it was too expensive to blast that deep beneath 13th Street South.
And so, when you get there Saturday night for the UAB-UTEP game, some of you will walk down to your seats, but others will have to climb some stairs.
It’s a small price to pay to see a Top 25 home team.
Bartow Arena hasn’t done exactly what Bartow intended it to do, either.
After leaving the cavernous-by-comp... |

Hard to keep a good man like Bartow down
Gene Bartow chuckled when he read my good-natured reference to him leaving the UAB-Tulsa game at halftime Tuesday night. He had left, but not because he thought the Blazers had the game won with a 16-point halftime lead.
``Ruth has me on a curfew,'' he said of his wife. ``I have to be home by 9 o'clock. I have to get my rest.''
